Let me say right up front, I’m a summer guy.
I like the long summer days that we enjoy here in the northeast. And then once it gets cooler, I basically hibernate from Thanksgiving until April 1. And then I don’t thaw out until Memorial Day. To me, summer is Memorial Day until Labor Day. Period.
However, the calendar tells me that autumn just started - officially, at least - a couple of days ago, on September 21. And it shows. It’s dark in the morning when I walk my dogs and there’s a nip in the air when I take them out at night. The mums and the pumpkins are making their appearance at the local nurseries. The one good thing about the coming cold weather is that I get to again make some of the dishes that I like to prepare when the weather gets chilly - the rich chicken soup with thick noodles and vegetables, gnocchi with a mushroom sugo, or slow-cooked turkey chili - and then settling down by the fire with my wife, a movie and a nice glass of Cabernet.
And while I’ll enjoy the fall - the crunchy apples, dressing my little girl up for her second Halloween, the crisp autumn nights, I’ll still think back to those warm summer nights, when the crickets and the cicadas sang their summer songs and the evenings spent in Spring Lake, walking along the boardwalk and then going to get ice cream at Hoffman’s. And I’ll keep an eye on the calendar, hoping April 1st gets here sooner rather than later.
